Auckland Council began a trial of less roadway/more footpath along High St in the central city this week.
In the first stage, a boardwalk has been used to widen the footpath between Shortland St & Vulcan Lane.
Cars & delivery trucks can still get through.
Council design office lead Cam Perkins said lessons learned during this phase would inform how the next phase is configured & rolled out.
Mayor Phil Goff announced the plan for a trial at the end of July, saying it “could be transformed into a world-class pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare by the end of 2022, 3 years earlier than previously planned”.
The council will trial increased pedestrian space in sections along the street over the next 7 months.
