Resource consent has been granted for the 5-star Park Hyatt Auckland hotel to be built on the Team NZ site in the Wynyard Quarter. Construction is expected to start early next year for a 2017 opening.
Council organisation Waterfront Auckland chose Beijing developer Fu Wah International Group in 2013 to develop the hotel, which the Hyatt Group will manage.
The 7-storey hotel on Halsey St, with views across the Viaduct Harbour & Te Wero Bridge, will have a total floor area of 29,000m², 195 rooms, a ballroom, multifunction room & business centres, entertainment facilities including a private dining room/function space, and a gym/health centre & day spa.
The design team is local practice Pete Bossley architects, ar+d of Singapore, and interior design by Conran & Partners of London.
Fu Wah will invest about $200 million in the project, including $2.5 million committed to the development of a new public space & art display.
Mayor Len Brown, currently in Xiamen talking to businesses including the waterfront hotel investors as part of the NZ-China Mayoral Forum, said: “Securing an investment of these proportions and a hotel of such high quality for Wynyard Quarter & Auckland clearly demonstrates what a council leveraging its strategic landholdings can do.
“This hotel means more jobs & a strong step into the lucrative but largely untapped ‘high net worth individuals’ tourism sector, which will be a huge benefit to Auckland’s economy & future.”
