Statistics NZ reckons New Zealand’s resident population reached 5 million in March.
The calculation is provisional 2020. Population insights senior manager Brooke Theyers said today the precise date the milestone figure was reached would come after the population estimates are revised to fully incorporate the 2018 census and census coverage results later in 2020, as well as revisions to international migration estimates. This could see the milestone date move slightly earlier or later than March 2020.
She said it was the fastest million New Zealand’s history, taking 17 years since 4 million was reached in 2003.”
The estimated resident population is provisionally 5,002,100 at 31 March 2020.
