In 2016, the net inflow was 62,078.
Statistics NZ changed its method of calculating migration 3 years ago, from an intentions basis on arrival to an outcomes basis revised monthly for several months, and introduced it progressively.
The most significant revision was for 2016-17 migration. Under the old calculation, the peak was 72,402 for the 12 months to July 2017. Using the new method, Statistics NZ calculated that the peak occurred in the 12 months to July 2016, and put it at 63,900.
The latest annual figure using the new method is 29.5% lower than the net migrant inflow for the December 2016 year (62,078), and 31.5% lower than for that peak of 63,900 to July 2016.
Statistics NZ’s provisional estimates for the 12 months to December 2019 are:
- Migrant arrivals 139,800 (± 1,700)
- Migrant departures 96,100 (± 1,500)
- Net migration gain 43,800 (± 2,100).
