The $15.5 million redevelopment of a former Whangarei supermarket site was marked on Wednesday with a dawn blessing ceremony to mark its first tenants officially setting up shop there.
The Northland Regional Council will retain ownership of most of the Kensington site previously occupied by a Countdown supermarket, and has been working with project development partner Argyle Estates Ltd since late 2018. Local construction company Arco Group Ltd was awarded the main contract for the redevelopment just under a year ago.
Regional council chair Penny Smart said councillors expected the development would breathe new life & vibrancy into the Kensington area as its medical centre, gym, physio & several food outlet tenants opened.
The revamp is being undertaken in 2 stages, starting with Kensington Health & Team Dental in the medical precinct, and a gym & separate physio business to come. The council has signed up 5 food outlets.
Early childhood education provider Best Start has taken title to the 1700m² northern part of the site, where it will construct a new building expected to cater for up to 75 children.
