Waitakere City councillors heard the benefits of business improvement districts today, when town centre liaison principal advisor Robin Jenkin-Winter & town manager Graeme Smith reported on the first 8 months of the city’s first such project, in Te Atatu.
Mr Smith said Te Atatu had almost no empty space. No businesses had closed in the peninsula in the last 6 months, apart from an architect who’d closed the doors and gone home. “I think it’s something to do with the promotion and our community is using the businesses more,” he said.
Although the business improvement district has a defined boundary, businesses outside that boundary can be affiliated and Mr Smith said the association kept in touch with industrial neighbours.
The next business improvement district in Waitakere will be at Glen Eden.
Ms Jenkin-Winter said the council would running an event for Henderson businesses soon and attempt to get an improvement district organisation started there, after previous failure.
