Statistics NZ said today the 6.2% seasonally adjusted rise in building activity in the March quarter was the strongest growth in 3 years.
Construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said: “Growth in building activity this quarter was driven by non-residential construction, including work on social & cultural buildings, offices & universities.”
The non-residential volume rose 9% & residential volumes 4.3% above the December quarter, led by Auckland.
Ms McKenzie also noted 2 other statistics bearing on the construction sector’s growth – the labour market statistics & retail spending, highlighting the rise in spending on hardware & building supplies.
