Barfoot & Thompson managing director Peter Thompson said yesterday the agency had its best January for home sales in 4 years, but listings at the end of the month were also the tightest in 4 years.
Average & median sale prices were up on December figures and new listings bumped over the 1000 mark.
“Buyers were active across all price segments and were prepared to pay near record prices,” Mr Thompson said.
“January’s trading confirmed the signs seen in November & December trading, which pointed to the Auckland housing market entering a new growth cycle.”
The agency lifted $1 million-plus sales by a third compared to January 2019, to 261 sales in that price bracket, ensuring the higher median.
New listings were up 58% from December, and 11.1% ahead of January last year, at 1080 for the month, but Mr Thompson said the market was still tight for choice: “At month’s end we had 3537 properties on our books, down 18.4% on the number in January last year and only on a par with the average number of listings for the previous 3 months.”
