€475 million Dublin dockland renewal project launched

Dublin is the next city on the international stage to redevelop its docklands, with a €475million Grand Canal Square scheme due to start soon, for completion in 2007.

The Dublin Docklands Development Authority has appointed Devey Group as preferred bidder to develop the Performing Arts Centre at Grand Canal Square in Dublin Docklands, designed by Daniel Libeskind.

The 2000-seat theatre will be integrated into a large retail & commercial development.

Irish Architecture Online described the project as “a heady mix of international architecture that will become a new urban village for Dublin City.”

It has 3 elements:

·         To the west, an indoor street/galleria containing village centre-type outlets and, above that, a range of individual office suites aimed at indigenous city businesses. It will provide an all-weather connection between the Grand Canal Dock, Liffey quayside & Grand Canal Square

·         To the north, the 94-room Park Hyatt Hotel & Residences has been designed by Manuel Aires Mateus

·         To the south, local firm Duffy Mitchell O’Donoghue has designed an office building “with light” – reflective through to transparent by day, glowing at night.
